As a follow up to last week’s post on meeting Joel Ruisi, this week we’re getting to know Vlado Atanasov, our Community Champion from Dublin as the Mobile Application Architect in Ryanair.

Tell us about yourself and what you do in your daily role?

Vlado: I’m a mobile software architect in Ryanair, Europe’s biggest ultra-low cost airliner. My daily job involves working closely with the mobile team on technical challenges, working on the infrastructure to support the mobile applications, and looking for solutions to practical problems. I work on many prototypes, some of which find their way in the production code. The languages I use for my work are Java and Go.

Where are you based and what do you like to do in your spare time?

Vlado: I’m based in Dublin, Ireland. In my free time, I like to ride my bikes on the road or on the trail, run, hike, hack hardware and software, and waste time with friends.

What made you choose Couchbase?

Vlado: Ryanair switched to a mobile-first approach and we were in need of a solution that can help achieve our goals. After evaluating different technologies, we decided that Couchbase is the right tool for us. The Couchbase Server + Sync Gateway + Couchbase Lite stack worked very well in our applications.

What have you accomplished using Couchbase?

Vlado: Using the embedded NoSQL database, we managed to speed up our applications significantly by working with local content; we had to rely on our REST APIs prior. Also, switching to NoSQL on the mobile platform allowed us to be more agile and match the demand of the business much easier than using relational databases in the past.

What one feature of Couchbase do you use and what should people know about it?

Vlado: My favourite feature is the Sync Gateway and the possibilities it opens for developers. When we combine the SG REST API with Couchbase Lite, we are able to solve complex data distribution issues, which were a real pain in the past.

If you could have three wishes for Couchbase what would they be?

Vlado: My only wish is for improved documentation sometimes it’s hard to find what I’m looking for.

What is your favorite book or author, and why?

Vlado: I love reading sci-fi and fantasy in my free time, and some of my favourite authors are Dan Simmons, Terry Pratchet and Isaac Asimov. They manage to fire up my imagination and keep me entertained during the whole read.
