A Recap of Couchbase at Red Hat Summit 2018

With all of the excitement and energy at Couchbase Connect in New York last week, it may have been easy to overlook some really compelling updates coming out of Couchbase’s strategic partnership with Red Hat at Red Hat Summit in San Francisco. One of the industry’s largest conferences about innovation in the open source community, and its growing adoption amongst enterprises, the Red Hat Summit brings together more than 7,000 attendees from the career IT professional to the open source contributor. This year, the event featured demonstrations of Couchbase on Red Hat OpenShift, and below is a brief recap of the highlights and key takeaways.

Keynote Highlights

In the morning keynote, Dietmar Fauser, VP – Core Platforms and Middleware at Amadeus, described the company’s hybrid cloud strategy with Red Hat OpenShift, while providing an overview of Couchbase’s critical role in the architecture of two production applications.

In a private cloud deployment of a hotel application, Couchbase is used for both the heavy-duty, fast access key value store, and to also replicate data across two U.S.-based data centers, one on the East Coast and one on the West Coast. In a private and public cloud deployment for a shopping application, Couchbase is used for scaling and geographical distribution.

In the afternoon keynote with Matt Hicks, SVP SW Engineering at Red Hat, Matt described Red Hat’s objectives in working with its ISV ecosystem to move beyond certified containers to deliver “trusted operations…through the Kubernetes Operators SDK” initiative, and highlighted Couchbase as one of the four featured launch partners for this new program.

As part of the launch, Chris Morgan, Global Technical Director – OpenShift Ecosystem at Red Hat, and Rob Szumski, Principal PM – Red Hat OpenShift, provided a live demonstration of the Couchbase Autonomous Operator on an OpenShift cluster to highlight how stateful business critical applications can run on Couchbase with OpenShift. Couchbase is proud to be the first and only NoSQL vendor with a functioning operator available now in technical preview. The performance, scalability and resiliency of Couchbase running on OpenShift will help IT teams deliver the flexible infrastructure architecture that developers and business leaders are increasingly demanding.
