Merge Right: Announcing Couchbase Server

ShareThis

It’s been just about a month since we announced the merger of Membase and CouchOne to form Couchbase, and it’s great to see that the post-merger integration is moving ahead at full steam.

Today is a big day for us for a couple of reasons:

  • We have completed the integration of our websites into a newly branded website at www.couchbase.com. Tell us what you think!
  • We are also launching our new technical community focused portal, the Couchbase Techzone, which is meant to be the place for a things technical
  • We are happy to announce the release Couchbase Server – our first delivery against our combined product roadmap.

Couchbase Server is our new product based on Apache CouchDB. We have created simple and easy to use binary installers for Linux (.deb and .rpm), Windows and MacOS. These packages include everything you need to get started with using CouchDB; no need to compile from source or worrying about external dependencies. You can get them in our download section.

In addition to core CouchDB, all of these packages include GeoCouch. With GeoCouch you can build true two-dimensional spatial indices (footnote: It is using R-Trees see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/R-tree); great for building location aware applications. As an example for using GeoCouch check out PDX API, which provides public geo data from Portland using GeoCouch.

The release of Couchbase Server also introduces Enterprise Edition packages, for which tiered commercial support is available up to 24x7. Community Edition packages are also available, with community support via the Couchbase Server forums on  TechZone.

Most importantly, the technical integration of Membase Server and Couchbase Server is starting and the combined product will leverage the strengths of both to create something greater than the sum of the parts.

I know this sounds very cliché, but in this case combining the scalability and performance of Membase Server with the document, synchronization and querying capabilities of CouchDB really will create magic. But that is a topic for another blog

Enjoy Couchbase Server!
