A couple months back I wrote an article for Mashable entitled How to Prepare Your Social Game for Massive Growth. In that article I argue that games integrated with social media can “go viral” – adding millions of users overnight – with the difference between success and failure turning on whether the game’s infrastructure can support that kind of explosive growth. Within just a month of publication, we gained two very visible data points in support of the argument.

Today I had the pleasure of spending some time with Attila Kisko, a Membase contributor and the author and maintainer of Enyim - the Membase Client Library for .NET. On holiday in San Francisco from Budapest, Hungary, Attila came by the office for a visit. Membase and Cloudera Integration
Today is an exciting day for Membase. A number of us are attending Hadoop World 2010 in New York City, and if the event reception tonight is any indication of things to come tomorrow, it is going to be an event I’d have hated to miss. A very smart crowd of data scientists on the leading edge of applying Hadoop, and Membase, to solve some extremely interesting, and diverse, application and data management problems.
Another membase milestone reached – beta 2 ships!
Another membase milestone was reached today – beta 2 was released and is available for download! Several cool features have been added, including support for datasets whose size exceeds the size of aggregate cluster main memory (i.e. supporting disk > RAM); very sexy, and useful, real-time and historical stat displays; and support for deploying moxi, the membase proxy, on a client-side machine. Looking back over the last three weeks, community reaction to membase has exceeded our collective expectations. We knew we were addressing an unmet need, but it is always a good feeling to hear it confirmed. We’ve had hundreds of downloads of membase beta 1 over the last three weeks and the feedback has been overwhelmingly positive: - “Membase appears to be the reliable, sharding and persistent memcached-alike we’ve all
been waiting for…” - “Membase is fast! like memcached fast. very low latency under load and good throughput…” - “Oh this is so hot, so very, very, hot…” But while it is nice to hear the good stuff, I tend to prefer hearing about the things people don’t like or the things users having trouble with.
NorthScale Unleashes Membase Server
Today is an exciting day for us at NorthScale. Along with our partners Zynga and NHN, we announced the formation of the membase open source project. Membase is a simple, fast, elastic "NoSQL" (absolutely hate that term, and we'll happily support anyone who can rally the world around a better moniker) database management system. Membase is currently serving data for some of the busiest web applications on the planet. The project is hosted at membase.org where source code, documentation and community information is now available.
