A year ago, almost to the day, I was working at VMware in the vFabric group on a beta product called AppDirector. It was designed to simplify the process of getting complex application environments up and running in a user serviceable way – as in – skip submitting a ticket and then waiting 2+ weeks for the IT group to build up and configure 10 virtual machines with Centos, Tomcat, MySQL and Apache. It was a great idea but I decided to leave VMware for Couchbase before I could see it fully completed.
A year has passed and a lot has happened in that time. I've been able to see how customers like Zynga, OMGPOP, AOL and Orbitz have benefited from Couchbase when their load profile requires them to scale their environment and service requests with a very low latency.
Which is why I am very excited to announce that both solutions are now available together. Couchbase Server is now available in VMware’s Solution Exchange for use in Application Director (see today’s press release).
Application Director has grown a lot since the last time I saw it. For those not familiar with the product, it provides a simple way for users to specify exactly what they need in a environment: their application build, web server, application server, backend database, # and type of VMs for all this to run off of – and have a easy and scalable way of consistently deploying that blueprint out to QA, test/dev or production.
