I've been wanting to describe some of my work with using R to help me understand data I'm collecting in Couchbase Server^† because I find it quite interesting, useful and easy. However, it's been difficult for me to figure out a good starting point because I don't know who the audience would be. That is, finding the right set of assumptions to get going has been quite hard.

A couple months back I wrote an article for Mashable entitled How to Prepare Your Social Game for Massive Growth. In that article I argue that games integrated with social media can “go viral” – adding millions of users overnight – with the difference between success and failure turning on whether the game’s infrastructure can support that kind of explosive growth. Within just a month of publication, we gained two very visible data points in support of the argument.

Couchbase is schema-less. That runs against the grain of traditional, RDBMS history and experience, but it's proven to be one of the most lauded features of NoSQL databases.

Not being required to develop a schema before you build your application is a huge time saver. It enables quick prototyping and lets you mold the structure of your document as you delve into its different uses within your application.

I spoke at the London JUG and was probably over ambitious in trying to include our recent work on Views, Hadoop Connector and the Android Grocery Sync application in a single presentation besides demoing the "simple, fast and elastic" theme that Couchbase and the client libraries support.

Every now and then you get the opportunity to prove yourself on a big stage. Four weeks ago we got the chance. Couchbase user, OMGPOP, had launched Draw Something – a Pictionary-like game that was going viral. Capitalizing on what would end up being an unprecedented growth opportunity, they absolutely had to scale their database. There were two non-negotiables: performance had to be sustained and the game could never be taken off line, even as the number of users and games rapidly accelerated.

You've probably seen those ubiquitous bumper stickers that state a driver's "other car is a ..." where "..." is some other form of transport that isn't a car.  If my laptop were to be accessorized with such a sticker, it would read "My other language is Python."  That's why when this .NET guy was asked to attend PyCon, I jumped at the chance.

I attended the Strata Conference last week and although I did not catch the talks, the buzz was definitely in the air on the show floor.    "Machine Learning," "I am  a Data Scientist" and "we are showing off a Hadoop connector" seemed like the most common pick up lines. Our Helicopter giveaways was amongst the most popular. I Wish I had one of them, but, as a Couchbase employee I was not eligible.

We use an incremental release model on the documentation here at Couchbase. What that means is that we change and update the material on a nearly daily basis, including the main server manuals, SDK guides and information and other details. Sometimes these are minor changes, and sometimes these are really major changes.
